Calabria
The region in the south
During the time of Magna Grecia, Callabria was given many different names - Bruttium, Saturnia, Ausonia, Entria, Terrenia and Esperia. However, it's most well known and important name was Italia and residents were know as Italians.
Later in time, this name was extended north as more of the environment became controlled by the Romans untillthe name covered the entire land mass we now call Italy today. (The name Calabria wasn't used until the regione of Byzantines.)
The villages Stilo and Rossano that achieved great status and wealth around 550 A.D still retain much of their Byzantine heritage that can be best found in the churches Stilo's La Cattolica and Rossano's San Marco Evangelista.
Frederik II was thought to have created the most civilized nation in the world in his current time. It was known as the Kingdom of the Sun, and included a place for western cultures, Islam and Greek Orthodox could meet. Calabria was part of this civilization as well as many Italian civilizations at the time.
In 1946, the Italians voted to discontinue the monarchy,exile the royal family of Savory (for it's view in fascism) and establish a republic.
