 CLIMATE

Il clima dentro Calabria e caldo e tropicale ovunque inverno e specialmente rovente e umido dentro estate.

There are essentially two types of climate in Calabria: the continental climate in the mountains and the Mediterranean climate of the coast. Due to the short distances between mountain and sea one can move quickly from one to the other. Winter is cold in the mountains with occasional snow; the summer is hot and muggy, but the nights are cool. In coastal and hilly areas there is the typical Mediterranean climate.

The winter here is never very cold and summer is very hot, sometimes torrid, as in all of the Mediterranean; with rain occurring predominantly in autumn and winter. Both spring and autumn have a very comfortable heat. While the sea water is still cool until mid-May despite the warmth, the weather stays hot and suitable for swimming into mid-November: being such a large mass of water the sea takes time to cool down.

The warm season lasts from June 18 to September 13 with an average daily high temperature above 28°C. The hottest day of the year is August 1, with an average high of 31°C and low of 24°C. The cold season lasts from November 24 to March 31 with an average daily high temperature below 18°C. The coldest day of the year is February 8, with an average low of 9°C and high of 15°C.

The median cloud cover ranges from 29% (mostly clear) to 63% (partly cloudy). The sky is cloudiest on January 7 and clearest on July 25. The clearer part of the year begins around May 27. The cloudier part of the year begins around September 21.
