Tourism has become a viable industry for Calabria and has increased over the years, particularly on the coastline. The splendid scenery of rocky coastal coves and  vast beaches has seen an influx of tourists. Many seaside resorts, some internationally owned are now dotted along the coast. As such, an increase in the employment of people in the hospitality sector has had a positive effect on the economy.

The mountainous regions also have great tourism potential. Winter sports based around snow are becoming popular. Many inland villages support buildings of artistic interest and include a famous 10th Century Byzantine church, cathedrals and unique village life.

Economics

Calabria is a very poor region of Italy. Although fairly extensive in size, the population is only slightly over 2 million, which although is high in density in the larger town regions, is lower than the national average.

There is an increasing trend towards a concentration of people in the more well known towns, particularly the coastal regions, whilst the inland rural regions are representative of a much lower standard of living, and where subsistence farming is still present.  Large scale emigration to Northern Italy has had a lasting effect on the demographics of Calabria and as such its economy.

Calabria is is famous for its olives and citrus fruits (oranges and bergamonts) and also wine grapes. Essential oils obtained  from bergamont farming are used in the industrial production of perfumes and sweet liqueurs.

One of Calabria's main agricultural export is olive oil, and many regions farm these trees as a viable business. In fact, 70% of all crops are trees. Other farming includes cerals, with the main crop being wheat. Specialised farming of aubergines, tomatoes, onions, water melons, beans and peppers are also common.

Calabria's industrial sector is underdeveloped and is characterised by small manufacturing companies. Textiles, foodstock, beverages, chemicals, metalworking, engineering and wood processing make up the majority of the industrial sector.

The Calabrian craft industry is still significant with the manufacture of fabrics, lace, ceramics and woodwork. Many still farm family owned land.
